Another two-wheeled tragedy

I find it troubling that the string of cycling deaths we saw in Ontario last year is continuing into 2012. A cyclist hit from behind at high speed by a motorist in Ottawa has died in hospital and that driver is now facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death. The troubling thing is this will play out in a courtroom and I bet the accused will end up with a fine or suspended sentence. That’s hardly fair for a human life. Until the law starts putting its collective foot down and treating mishaps involving vehicles and cyclists on the same level as crashes involving vehicles with other vehicles we will never make any headway in sharing the roadway. With people trying to be 'greener' and gas prices expected to rise again this year, drivers have got to be aware that cyclists are not going away. In same breath, those on bikes need to obey the rules of the road and too many give law-abiding two-wheeled commuters a bad name. Last fall, the Ontario coroner found the situation so troubling he called for an investigation to see if there's a common thread. Dr. Dan Cass' report is expected this spring and hopefully there's some recommendations that can made the roadways safer for all. I’m Bill Kingston.
